Today, Wednesday 26 March 2025, South Dublin County Council is delighted to support An Garda SÍochána and the Irish Tyre Industry Association (ITIA) in National Tyre Safety Day. This initiative aims to highlight the significance of routine tyre inspections for all drivers.

Did you know that defective tyres can be a contributing factor in fatal or serious road collisions?

Based on the analysis of road collision reports, the Road Safety Authority estimates that defective tyres could be a contributory factor, resulting in as many as 14 deaths each year. Tyres also continue to be the primary reason for NCT failures in Ireland, so make it a habit to inspect your car or motorcycle tyres every time you intend to hit the road. Remember, they are your only protection between you and the road!

During your check, examine the general condition of each tyre, focusing on

Side walls: bulges, cuts, or punctures on the sidewalls

Tread wear: consistent / irregular wear patterns = alignment or suspension problems

Bulges: air pocket could be forming

Cracks: impact tyre strength

Cuts or grazes: leaks or blowouts can result

Check tyre Inflation: essential for top performance, fuel efficiency, and safety

Your tyres must meet the following minimum tread depth, make sure to utilize a tyre pressure gauge. Assess your tyre pressure when the tyres are cold and make adjustments as needed.

Car tyres = 1.6 mm by law but recommended 3 mm

Motorcycle tyres = 1 mm by law
