Proposed Improvement Works at Griffeen Valley Park, Lucan
Notice is hereby given that it is proposed to undertake improvement works in Griffeen Valley Park, Lucan. The proposed works and the reasons for them are detailed as follows:
1. To extend the existing pedestrian paths by 4km. This will develop a network of paths throughout the park area, stretching from the Newcastle Road to the Lucan Sports and Leisure Centre and which will form a combined circulation route of approximately 7km as far as
Griffeen Avenue. This path system will allow for increased leisure and work circulation routes through Griffeen Valley Park.
2. To develop a Cycle path route of 2.8km connecting Newcastle Road, Lucan Sports and Leisure Centre and Griffeen Avenue as well the adjoining housing estates. This recognises the fact that there is a demand to use our parks as routes for cyclists for both leisure and work purposes. Both of the above proposals 1 and 2 will increase the usage of the park and
increase security in the park by the increased public presence.
3. To extend the existing car park at Hayden’s Lane by 50 car spaces and to upgrade the appearance of the car park itself. The existing car park does not cater for the volume of use at peak times and has deteriorated in appearance.
4. To develop new entrances at the Newcastle Road/Esker Lane and the Esker Lane/Hayden’s Lane junctions. This recognises the fact that the public using the park have created ‘desire
lines’ and ‘desire entrances’ and in the interests of safety and convenience it is necessary to create purpose built entrances and regularise the existing situation.
5. To relocate the existing pedestrian entrance at Hayden’s Lane. It is desirable to move the entrance away from the adjoining residential community.
6. To construct a new pedestrian bridge adjacent to King John’s bridge (in consultation with the Conservation Officer). There is public usage of the remnants of the old bridge and in the interests of safety and to protect the old bridge itself it is desirable to provide an
alternative option for pedestrians.
