Proposals to extend the Square Shopping Centre, Tallaght

 

 

 

Further to recent newspaper reports, South Dublin County Council wish to clarify the following:-

 

 

·        Planning permission was granted for a major extension to The Square Shopping Centre in February 2001.  This is known as the ‘

Millennium Square

’ development or ‘Phase III’ of The Square and includes a new public space, additional shopping, office and residential development.  This comprises part of the new development referred to in recent reports.  This development has not commenced on site and the planning permission is shortly due to run out.  A new planning application is required to be made if this proposal is to proceed.  It is understood that a new planning application is likely to be submitted to South Dublin County Council over the coming weeks.

 

 

 

·        The South Dublin County Development Plan 2004 requires the preparation of a Masterplan to guide the future development of Tallaght Town Centre.  Further phases of development at the Square will be determined in the context of a Local Area Plan (Masterplan for the whole Tallaght Town Centre area), currently being prepared by South Dublin County Council.  The preparation of this Plan has been subject to two rounds of pre-plan public consultation and a draft Local Area Plan will be finalised for public display early in 2006, for subsequent determination by the elected members of the Council.  Pre-planning discussions on further phases of development of the Square site are at a conceptual stage only in the context of the Local Area Plan pre-plan discussion.
