. The Mayor will present youth groups in Tallaght with Awards, Prizes and Certificates for their citizenship projects, which were carried out since last September 2004. The night will begin with the arrival of Ray D’Arcy, at 7pm sharp, who will take time to look at the projects on display and be photographed with each of the 14 groups who entered. He will then address those present, briefly, before the official start of the ceremony. The Guest Speaker for the evening will be Conor Lenihan TD. There will also be speakers from Foróige, County Dublin VEC and young people who have participated in the Awards.
This is the third year of the Tallaght Youth Service Community Spirit Awards. It was introduced in 2003 to mark the 21st Anniversary of Tallaght Youth Service, which is operated by Foróige. The Community Spirit Awards reflects the overall purpose of Foróige’s work with young people ie. To enable young people to involve themselves consciously and actively in their own development and in the development of society. Citizenship is an important part of this work. “The Awards Programme celebrates young people making a difference in their communities, which is what Tallaght Youth Service has encouraged through their work in Tallaght over the past 23 years”, said Caroline Hope, Manager of Tallaght Youth Service since 1982.
This year the projects were submitted in June and judged over the summer months. There will be six winners and runners up of three different categories and an overall winner will be presented with a perpetual trophy. The categories are Environment, Services to the Community, and Social Issues/Human Rights.
