Mayor Robert Dowds presents cheque  for €25000 to representatives from Trocaire,Concern, Irish Red Cross and Christian Aid Agencies.


The money was raised following an awareness/fundraising week in support of the Asian disaster and other natural and man-made disasters in Africa and ran from 13th to 20th March.Mayor Dowds thanked the Manager, Members, staff and people  of South Dublin County  who gave generously of both their time and money in order to ensure that the events and activities were successful and well supported across the county. 

As part of the initiative  the  Council offered its  facilities as venues throughout the course of the week for the purposes of fundraising and to make people aware of the affects of disaster on humanity.The facilities included the Civic Theatre,Grange ,Castle Golf Course and the Concourse in County Hall Tallaght.


Information stands and videos were shown  daily  in County Hall Tallaght.       

This special week long  programme  included the South Dublin County Art Aid exhibition in the  Civic Theatre (13th March), where the art work was donated  by both established and emerging artists and included paintings, prints, drawings and photographs in a wide range of styles and media.

This occasion gave people the opportunity to purchase artwork for the first time or to add to their existing collection whilst contributing to the fund..

  The Art Aid Exhibition was followed by a  benefit performance of traditional, jazz and classical music and singing, featuring Eamon Lawlor, MC (Lyric FM), Hugh Tinney (piano) Tallaght Choral Society, Emer Mayock (traditional flute), Donal Siggins (guitar) and Rhonwen Hayes (jazz vocalist).

County Hall Tallaght hosted an evening of Spoirt agus Craic on16th March with traditional Cheili Music by  Brian Boru and an evening of set dancing with Ceili caller Ann O Donnell  from Aras Chronin..As with all the events the participants generously  donated their time and money to the appeal.

A sunny weekend saw Grange Castle Golf Course  alive with budding professionals and hopeful amateurs.This golf classic with Team Entry at €200 and sponsorships at €300 generated  a substantial amount of money which brought the grand total to €25000.

 

Mayor Dowds expressed his gratitude for the support shown ‘Yet again I am heartened by the response and generosity of the people of South Dublin,it further highlights the great compassion we have for people in difficulty’.

 

 

The money raised under this programme will be split 50/50 between the needs of the tsunami victims and the needs of the people in Africa.
