Grange Castle Road (Outer Ring Road Phase 1) will  open to the public on Wednesday 26th January 2005 at 12. Noon.

 

Project Description

 

It is an objective of South Dublin County Council to link the  N4 (Galway Road) with the N81 (Tallaght By-Pass) via a grade separated interchange on the N7 Naas Road in accordance with the County Councils Development Plan.

 

The new road is considered essential to service ongoing and proposed residential and industrial development of the South Dublin County Area.

 

The proposed scheme will particularly improve infrastructure links between the towns of Lucan, Clondalkin, and Tallaght, within the South Dublin County Area.

The road will also service Grange Castle International Business Park and significant areas of land at Adamstown, to the west of the scheme, zoned for new residential development.

 

The overall scheme will be developed in three main parts.

 

1.        Adamstown to N7 Kingswood

2.        Adamstown to N4 Lucan Road

3.        Kingswood to Tallaght By-Pass N81

 

Phase 1

Construction of 6km of dual carriageway including:

A grade separated interchange at Kingswood Naas Road

2 overbridges – (1) bridge over Grand Canal, (2) Bridge over Dublin  - Kildare railway line.

4 roundabouts and a signalised junction at Nangor Road – Grange Castle Road

 

Construction Cost: €33 million

 

Construction Period: December 2002 – January 2005.

Funding: Grant from Department of Environment and Local Government, grant from   National Roads Authority and Council resources.

 

Contractor: Coffey Construction Limited.

 

Open  to the public on Wednesday 26th January 2005.

 

 

 

 

Phase 2

 

Phase 2 provides for the upgrading 2.3 km. of the existing carriageway link between Balgaddy junction and the N4  Lucan Road with a dedicated bus lane in each direction.

·           A new single carriageway road link between Adamstown Roundabout and the Fonthill Road Junction to the east.

·           Existing roundabout junctions at Balgaddy, Pennyhill and Ballyowen to be changed to traffic signal controlled junction, while junction modifications and a new pedestrian/cycle track  are proposed at the N4 Ballydowd Interchange.

·           Bus priority and cycle routes and improved pedestrian facilities are provided for the entire scheme.

 

Approval for the scheme was granted by An Bord Pleanála June 2004.

 

Construction to start 2nd Quarter 2005.   Duration: 15 months

 

 

Phase 3

 

Phase 3 provides for a link road connecting the Naas Road, N7, with the Tallaght By-Pass, N81.

·           Widening of the existing Cheeverstown Road from the N81 to the junction with Brookfield Road.

·           An extension of a single carriageway with dedicated bus lanes in each direction from Brookfield Road to the interchange at Kingswood on the N7.

·           Provision of dedicated bus lanes in each direction with signalised junctions and improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

 

Environmental Impact Statement and CPO to be published 1st Quarter 2005.
