Mayor Robert Dowds will attend the Official Launch by President Mary McAleese, of an Economic and Social Evaluation of the Senior Help Line by Dr. Eamon O’Shea, NUI Galway at City West Hotel, Saggart, on Monday 18th October at 2pm.

The Senior Help Line was established in 1998 to provide a listening service for older people who are lonely and isolated. The service, originally launched by President Mary McAleese, is operated on a voluntary basis, by older people, many of whom are of quite advanced age. The volunteers have all undergone a specially designed training programme, supported by other voluntary and statutory agencies. The service has progressed to a national service, with 300 older people providing the service from eleven centres across the country.

Dr Eamon O’Shea (from NUI – Galway) has produced a comprehensive evaluation of the service and has issued some important conclusions for its future development. It is the intention of the Senior Help Line to embrace the report and work steadily towards the implementation of these recommendations.

Issued on behalf of the Council by Head of Corporate Services Benny Hickey benny.hickey@sdublincoco.ie
