LAUNCH OF NEW ADAMSTOWN WEBSITE ANNOUNCED

On 20th September 2004, South Dublin County Council launched a new website www.adamstown.ie relating to the Adamstown development.

The website contains a range of information including the latest project news, access to all planning applications and the Adamstown Planning Scheme document.  The site also includes contact details for the South Dublin County Council Adamstown Project Team and will be updated regularly.

Development of the website coincides with the setting up of the Adamstown Project Team within South Dublin County Council.  The Team is responsible for managing the implementation of the Adamstown Planning Scheme or ‘Masterplan’ approved by An Bord Pleanala in 2003.

The Project Team’s roles include assessing planning applications and monitoring development in Adamstown to ensure compliance with the Planning Scheme.  The Team is a point of contact for all queries in relation to Adamstown and is working with the appropriate bodies to ensure the early delivery of key facilities and infrastructure.  The Adamstown Project Team can be contacted on:- info@adamstown.ie or on 01 414 9000.

The Council’s Director of Planning, Kieran Kennedy explains that “The Adamstown Project is a radically new approach to the comprehensive planning and development of new residential communities and that it will deliver a significant number of housing units together with supporting facilities and infrastructure on a strictly phased basis.”

The Council’s Project Manager for Adamstown, Paul Hogan is confident that “the phasing of facilities and infrastructure in tandem with housing is the key to ensuring the early provision of shops, schools, railway station, busways, roads, parks, community buildings, leisure and childcare facilities”.

“We are delighted that the Adamstown Team has been joined by Fionnuala Lennon as Project Planner and Derek Taylor as Project Technician.  Fionnuala has worked on similar large-scale urban expansion projects in the UK and Derek has significant experience of major infrastructure projects.”

The first planning application for development in Adamstown was submitted on 24 June 2004.  Permission was sought by Castlethorn Construction Ltd. for 448 dwelling units although a revised submission was made on 1 September for 407 units.  South Dublin County Council is due to make a decision on the application by the 28 September.  If planning permission is granted, it is expected that work will start on site this Autumn.

Further planning applications relating to Adamstown likely to be submitted before Christmas include applications for the 2km Adamstown Link Road which will link Adamstown to the Outer Ring Road and the Adamstown Railway Station and Park and Ride facility, which will provide fast access to Dublin City Centre by train.

Background Information for Editors:

Adamstown is a new urban district on a greenfield site adjoining the main Dublin-Kildare railway line, 10 miles (16km) west of Dublin City Centre. To be developed over 10 or more years and based on an approved Planning Scheme or ‘Masterplan’ prepared by South Dublin County Council, Adamstown will provide up to 10,000 new homes along with a range of shopping, employment, leisure, civic & cultural facilities.

Facilities and infrastructure for the new community of Adamstown must be provided in tandem with housing development. A new railway station, bus corridors, roads, schools, parks community buildings, childcare facilities and drainage networks are required on a phased basis.

Adamstown was designated a ‘Strategic Development Zone’ by the Government in 2001 and a Planning Scheme approved by An Bord Pleanala in 2003.  As ‘Development Agency’, South Dublin County Council is committed to ensuring that Adamstown is a sustainable urban community with a strong sense of identity that is attractive, safe and secure in a traditional town and village format and that development occurs at a pace whereby it is supported by all necessary facilities and infrastructure.
