This one week festival at the end of June will set South Dublin County buzzing to the sounds of Slovenian 'turbo folk', Croatian pop, and Congolese Soukous, as part of a programme that celebrates music, literature, visual art and film in urban and rural South Dublin County.
FUSED presents performers and artists, international and Irish, in local venues and virtual spaces.

MUSIC…


Spanish Guitarist AUGUSTIN MARURI, currently on tour in Ireland performs in the Old Library Building, Rathcoole with AISLING ENNIS (Rathcoole), principal harpist with the National Youth Orchestra. Sun 20th @ 3pm

The festival officially opens later that evening with FAKE ORCHESTRA (Slovenia), who bring their unique style, an intermesh of traditional Slovenian sounds, jazz evergreens, African and Cuban rhythms to the opening concert. The orchestra is led by veteran guitarist Igor Leonardi, who has played with artists ranging from Don Cherry to Metallica, during his ten years in the States.

VISUAL…

As a local festival, FUSED has already made an impact outside of its county boundaries. The festival will be simultaneously launched by The Kibla Gallery in Marabour in Southern Slovenia, who will feature FUSED:XØVER as part of the gallery programme.

FUSED: XØVER  (cross over), is a curated website exhibition running from 21  June - 16 July in South Dublin County Libraries and County Hall, Tallaght.  The exhibition is also available to the online international community. It features artists working in new media, which is either realised or supported by Internet based art works. 

Featured artists: Lionello Borean (Italy); Geoffrey Thomas (USA); Heath Bunting (UK); Reynald Drouhin (France);Joseph & Donna McElroy (USA); Lasse Raa (Scandinavia);Young Hae Chang (South Korea); Pierre Martens(Belgium); Vuk Cosic (Slovenia); Shirin Kouladjie (India).

Belgian artist, and EU Ambassador for the Environment, Pierre Mertens will present his views on Contemporary Arts Culture: Virtual or Reality? A discussion on the role of new media and where the limits lie.
Thursday 24 June Loose End Studio, Civic Theatre,4pm

FUSED visual arts will also provide the Dublin venue for Shoot at the Artist which is both an installation and a story of the last years of the totalitarian regime in the former Yugoslavia. In a series of original posters, from the provocative covers of emblematic of Mladina, the leading Slovenian political weekly, it documents the part that Slovenian youth and underground movements played in the downfall of the government of 50 years standing.

21 June - 10 July Alternative Entertainments Gallery, Civic Theatre, Tallaght

The diversity of communities in South Dublin County has been captured by Cas. Kaia Kena na Ciniocha, This 3m square and 2m high installation takes the shape and form of a colourful nomadic tent that symbolises the impermanent nature of the circumstances of migrant people. This installation is the product of a project facilitated by Tallaght Community Arts Centre and realized by members of the many communities in South Dublin County.

Thurs 10-Wed 30 June The Adelaide & Meath Hospital, Dublin, incorporating the National Children's Hospital,Tallaght.

MUSIC…

 

CONGO MUSICA, an eight piece African band from Congo formed in Ireland play a lively ' up tempo' traditional African music called' Soukous', based on rhythm and melody with strong harmonic vocals. Supported by The Brand, and The Gerry Hendrix Band Sat 26th, Civic Sq,Tallaght, 4. 00pm

PIPSCHIPS & VIDEOCLIPS (Croatia) whose ".. wicked mix of unpredictable Croatian folk and nice, clean New York beats .."  (The Face magazine) can be heard on Wed 23rd, The Spa Hotel, Lucan, 8.00pm The Pips will be supported by four piece Tallaght band The Brand, who have been establishing themselves on the Irish and international music scene over the last few years.

FILM…

The festival's film programme features:

SPARE PARTS (Slovenia) Directed by Damjan Kozole - a film about two insignificant smugglers and many nameless illegal refugees);
S WEET DREAMS (Slovenia) Directed by Saso Podgorsek - Multi award winning film about the coming of age and the journey along the way.  Set at the beginning of the seventies in prosperous Yugoslavia, where everybody but thirteen-year-old Egon Vitorri owns a record player, we follow his steps to aquire one!

THEIR NAMES IN MARBLE (Estonia) Director by Elmo Nüganen - Set in 1918, as Estonia struggles to maintain its independence. During this time when schoolboys were among its most enthusiastic defenders, Henn Ahas reluctantly joins his classmates following an attack on his village, and experiences the fears and dangers of war

LITERATURE…

FUSED Literature presents two events: Christine Dwyer Hickey, award- winning novelist and short story writer, who is enjoying great success with her current novel, 'TATTY ' visits Clondalkin Library on Thursday 24th June, at 7. 30pm.

 

VOICES FROM A NEW IRELAND presents Dermot Bolger, Joseph O' Connor, Deirdre
Purcell and Hugo Hamilton: four of Ireland 's most distinctive authors reading together in a relaxed
afternoon environment. Saturday 26th June Civic Theatre, Tallaght, 2pm - 4. 30pm

The festival also features workshops for children and themed evenings in local libraries.


FUSED is presented by South Dublin County Arts Office and Library Services.
