Institute of Technology Tallaght & South Dublin County Council Bursary Award Scheme
The Institute Of Technology Tallaght has applied to the Council for a financial contribution towards the Institute’s Sports Bursary Award Scheme.
This bursary awards scheme offers students across many disciplines of sport a grant towards their education and / or sports training expenses incurred. It gives some students the opportunity to continue participating in their chosen sport when they enter college rather than sacrificing sport for part time employment to meet additional expenses associated with 3rd level education.
In the past the college has promoted the bursary award scheme from internal resources. However, because of considerable sporting progress athletes and teams alike have made at the college, there is a need to develop the bursary awards scheme in line with these achievements. The college has already made its name on the college sporting scene by winning the trench cup for gaa in 2003. In addition a student from the institute was selected on the Irish student soccer team which competed at the world student soccer games in Korea this year. Such sporting achievements continue to increase the profile of the college in terms of identity and sporting status among its educational peers.
The year 2004 is the ‘year of education through sport’ and it is appropriate that the council and the institute should mark the occasion in the manner outlined.
The council has agreed to contribute €5,000 towards the Institute of Technology Tallaght bursary awards scheme for the academic year 2003/2004 and €7,000 for the academic year 2004/2005.
At a special ceremony today in the institute of technology Tallaght, the following 15 recipients and full time students were awarded sports and recreational bursaries with a total value of €19000. These bursaries are also co funded by student capitation fees.
It Tallaght welcome this new partnership with South Dublin County Council in promoting sport in the community.
