Mythic Journey and Killinarden Short Shorts were commissioned by South Dublin County Council and funded through the Department of the Environment Per Cent for Art Scheme.
Mythic Journey describes the experiential process undertaken by a group of adults from
Donomore who set out to create a costume with which they could identify themselves. Leaving
their homes they set about navigating their way along the Royal road from Tara to Tallaght and visited the
ancient hunting ground of the Fianna and Fionn Mac Cumhaill in the valley of Glenasmole. Any journey
requires skills development so each person set about learning the art of spinning, dyeing and weaving. They then journeyed to Clare Island to weave silk with Beth Moran and with the assistance of Annie Dibble and Angela
O’Kelly, set about completing their costume.
The Mythic Journey voyagers were Denise Holan, Vera Murray, Gretta Quinn, Helen Williams, Sharon
Clarke and Jan Doyle. Their navigator during the year was artist Mary O’Rourke.
The outcome of their journey forms an exhibition/installation which will run from Monday 8th September
to Friday 12th September, 10am – 4pm. Students from local schools will visit and participate in workshops
led by newly skilled voyagers. Any queries contact: maryporourke@eircom.net or phone 087 2332325
