Vehicles discovered were involved in illegal transport of waste
The Council encounters ongoing problems of illegal dumping at various locations in its administrative area and receives numerous requests for clean ups following dumping of rubbish by the public.
Lynch’s Lane, in particular is a black spot for dumping and requires continuous attention from clean up squads of the Environmental Services Department. Over 1000 tons of rubbish has been cleared from this location during 2002 at a cost of € 100,000 euro to South Dublin County Council.
Following discussions with Gardai and with their assistance Senior Staff of the Environmental Services, Travellers Accomodation and Parks Departments mounted an operation at Lynches Lane between the hours of 3 and 7 pm on May 9th , with the specific intention of stopping and searching vehicles carrying waste without waste disposal permits.
Under Section 14 of the 96 Waste Management Act, the Council is empowered to stop and search vehicles and remove them to a safe location where the waste they contain may be examined and disposed of correctly.
With the co- operation of the Gardai, a check point was set up and vehicles were stopped and searched. The check point operated for four hours and during this time, two vehicles were found by Council Officials to be transporting waste illegally. Both vehicles were light commercial vans and neither driver had a permit. Legal action will be taken against both drivers.
