Minister Ahern Approves Funding Of €39 Million For Homeless Services In Dublin

Mr Noel Ahern TD, Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal, today (24 April 2003) approved funding of €39 million for accommodation and related homeless services in the Dublin area.

€16.5 million is being allocated for accommodation, outreach and settlement services, and day services, compared with €14.5 million last year. These services are mainly provided by the voluntary sector and the Minister said, “This level of funding will enable them to provide these essential services for homeless people, as part of the overall implementation of the Dublin homeless action plan”.

A further €22.5 million has been allocated for emergency bed and breakfast accommodation in the Dublin area.

Minister Ahern said, “This level of funding indicates the Government’s ongoing commitment to tackling homelessness. Despite the tight financial situation, the overall allocation for funding for accommodation and related homeless services is €50 million this year, compared with €43 million last year.”

Commenting on the recent fire at Back Lane Hostel in Dublin, the Minister “praised the co-ordinated effort of Dublin City Council and the voluntary bodies in finding suitable alternative accommodation for the residents of the hostel.”
