Bye Laws begin to bite
Illegal Drinking in Public Places an offence
To date the number of contraventions of these Bye Laws detected by the Gardai and fines by South Dublin County Council are:-
2001 - 125. fine total - €2,222.11
2002 - 470. do - €14,473.32
2003 to 21/2/03 - 90. do - €2,895.46
A number of cases have been successfully taken where payment was not forthcoming and the Council emphaises its commitment to continue to strongly pursue and enforce these byelaws.
Background:
The Council ‘s Bye Laws prohibit the consumption of intoxicating liquor in public places within the County of South Dublin. Since 9th August 2001, it is an offence to
1. Consume or attempt to consume intoxicating liquor in a public place within the functional area of the Council or
2. Possess intoxicating liquor in a public place within the functional area of the Council with the intention to consume it in a public place or to supply it to any person for consumption in a public place within the functional area.
The Gardaà enforce them and fines of €63.49 are issued.
If not paid within 21 days a Court case will ensue.
A person found guilty in the Courts may be liable to a fine not exceeding €1269.74.
