SOUTH DUBLIN LIBRARIES CHILDREN’S SUMMER PROGRAMME JULY – AUGUST 2014
Summer is buzzing at South Dublin Libraries!
The school holidays are almost here and South Dublin Libraries have plenty of activities planned to help keep the children entertained – and best of all, these events are all free of charge!!
The Summer Reading Buzz is the cornerstone of South Dublin Libraries’ summer programme. South Dublin Libraries (along with Dublin City, DLR and Fingal, Kildare and Longford) will be hosting their highly successful challenge, The Summer Reading Buzz, for a second year running. So how does the challenge work? Children are encouraged to read ten or more books of their choice from the library during the summer holidays. They can sign up at their local branch or mobile library where they will receive a loyalty card which is stamped each time they read a book. Prizes are awarded along the way and once the card is completed, it is entered into a special draw which takes place at the end of the summer. Each child can complete as many loyalty cards as they choose. As always, South Dublin Libraries will be running fantastic activities for children that complement the challenge. Summer reading programmes run in libraries right across the world to address the slump in reading levels that happens when children are away from school.
Just a few highlights of the jam-packed summer programme of free events and activities across our branches include:
- “Pirate” themed events at County Library Tallaght with story telling, a magic show, arts and crafts, movies and lots more…
- Animal Encounter with the Reptile Zoo and Summer Blast with Reuben Not a Clown at Clondalkin Library
- Intergenerational Creative Batik workshop for children with parent/grandparent/aunt/uncle at Lucan Library
- Ugly Duckling Puppet Show also at Lucan Library
- Summer crafts at Castletymon Library including a Fairy House Workshop
- Create a Graphic Novel with author Alan Nolan, Storytime for Little Ones, Jack Flash magic show, all at Ballyroan Library
So for summer fun for all ages a visit to the library is a must! South Dublin libraries are great places for children and families to gather and enjoy themselves while improving their literacy levels this summer. And don’t forget, all our services are free!
