Bishop Shanahan NS, Orwell Park raises their Green Schools Flag for Water to tumultuous cheers.

The Mayor Dermott Looney congratulated Bishop Shanahan National School on receiving their Green Schools Flag for water as part of the Green Schools Programme supported by South Dublin County Council and An Taisce.

The Mayor, said “Taking part in the Green Schools Programme involves a lot of hard work, but it is so worthwhile and you should all be very proud of what you have done to help conserve water”

Bishop Shanahan National School reduced water usage in excess of 28%. They had a Water Action Day where they held water experiments in the school hall and neighboring schools were invited to attend. They also carried water around the school to experience what it is like for children from third world countries to get clean water.

The students formed a guard of honor from the school to the flag pole through which the green school committee carried the flag aloft, with the Mayor following behind. It was a great moment of excitement when the flag was finally raised.

In 2013/2014 South Dublin County received 37 green school flags for protecting the environment along various themes - Litter & Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity and Global Citizenship.
