Greenhills College proudly raises their 1st Green Schools Flag - 21st May 2014
The Mayor Dermott Looney congratulated Greenhills College on receiving their 1st Green Schools Flag as part of the Green Schools Programme supported by South Dublin County Council and An Taisce.
The Mayor, a past pupil of Greenhills College said “It is a fantastic achievement and it is something that the students should be very proud of.“
Greenhills College managed to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by over 25%. In addition, recycling has become the norm now with a recycling bin in every class and the students arranging weekly rotas to ensure that recycling continues and develops in the school.
The Mayor continued “I am a teacher myself, so I know how much work has been put in by the teachers, the caretaker, the parents and the students to receive this flag. This could not take place without the support of the principal Mr Walsh. The green flag can be seen from the road and gives a clear message of pride in the school and in the area and I am delighted to be associated with it.”
The Green Schools programme is an International programme with over 3000 schools involved in protecting the environment along various themes - Litter & Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity and Global Citizenship.
The Mayor concluded “I urge you all to keep up the good work, congratulations and well done to you all”.
The principal Mr Walsh raised the flag to tumultuous applause from all present. Greenhills College had a beautiful cake to commemorate the occasion which is being donated to a local charity.
