Winning Entry “An Ireland of Inclusion” – 1848 Tricolour Essay Competition in South Dublin

Congratulations to Rockbrook Park School, Rathfarnham who won the overall prize in the competition. The other winners included students from Colaiste de hIde, Tallaght, Holy Family Community School, Rathcoole, Colaiste Cois Life, Lucan and St. Kevins Community College, Clondalkin.

The Irish tricolour was created by Young Irelander Thomas Francis Meagher and first flown in Waterford City in 1848. It famously represents peace (white) between Catholics (green) and Protestants (orange).

This year, Waterford City Council organised a celebration of the tricolour, during which two tricolours were presented to the Chair/Mayor of each local authority in Ireland. One of these flags is permanently situated in the county hall, Tallaght while the second flag was presented to Rockbrook Park School, Rathfarnham at a prize giving ceremony in County Hall, Tallaght.

Rockbrook Park School was selected as overall winner by way of an essay competition run by Mayor Dermot Looney, in conjunction with South Dublin Libraries and the Echo Newspaper Group.
