Irish Water National Award for South Dublin School - Tuesday 6th May 2014

St Peters Boys National School, Greenhills, Dublin 12, from South Dublin County won the overall National Award for Water Conservation in the An Taisce Green Schools Programme. Minister Phil Hogan and Director of Irish Water, Dr John Tierney presented the award at the An Taisce and Irish Water awards ceremony in Crock Park on 6th May 2014.

The school received this award because of the work that the students, teachers and parents have done to examine different ways of water use and conservation. Their application impressed Irish Water and an Taisce so much that after winning the regional award, the school was chosen for the overall national award. The students undertook projects on water conservation and had a Day of Action carrying water so that they could experience what it was like to carry water in countries where people have to travel for clean water.

Mary Johnston, Principal of St Peter’s Boys National School said “I am very proud of all the students, teachers and parents. This is a wonderful honour for the school. The whole school community put a lot of effort into this project”

Mayor Dermot Looney said “This is a great honour for St Peter’s BNS and South Dublin County. I am a proud past pupil of the school and know at close hand the great tradition of commitment to the environment at St Peter’s. I want to congratulate Principal Mary Johnson, Deputy Principal Brian Redmond and all the staff involved in promoting the Green Flag programme in the school. I also want to congratulate the pupils at the school who have worked hard to save water and promote such a positive message. I’m looking forward to dropping by to raise the latest Green Flag and congratulating all involved in person!”

It took a lot of work and great commitment from the students and teachers to receive this award. South Dublin County Council is committed to supporting the Green schools programme throughout its region on all themes, Litter & Waste, Energy, Water, Travel, Biodiversity and Global Citizenship.

Big congratulations to the whole school community of St Peters BNS, Greenhills.
