Mayor and Deputy Mayor host Mayor’s Fund Presentation Ceremony in County Hall, Tallaght, 27th January 2014

Over 100 representatives from local communities all over South Dublin County gathered in County Hall, Tallaght on Monday night to be presented with their cheques at an event hosted by the Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Dermot Looney, along with Deputy Mayor, Cllr Eamon Tuffy.

The Mayor's Fund was introduced by Mayor Dermot Looney and Deputy Mayor Eamon Tuffy, who together allocated a combined total of €10,000 from their allowances during their term of office to this new community initiative. 75 groups applied with 50 organisations proving successful in securing a grant of €200 from the Mayor’s fund for their group. The groups represent all of the electoral areas in the county and work in areas as diverse as older care, girl guides, martial arts, active retirement and youth work.

Cllr Tuffy stated that the “themes for the fund were selected by myself and the Mayor to benefit youth sport, older persons and environmental groups across the whole of South Dublin County. The objective of this initiative was to reach out and support local communities, increase community participation and promote social inclusion through the stimulation and support of community groups and a variety of community activities

Mayor Dermot Looney in his speech said “tonight’s event shows that community action is real. At a time when Tallaght and other parts of South Dublin County are under criticism, the breadth of groups and the fantastic attendance at this event are indicators of the strength of community participation locally. This fund is not only about the cheque you receive; it is about recognising the work you all carry out in your communities. It takes a community to raise a child, to ensure dignity in old age and to protect our environment; this fund supports the work of community groups in doing just that."

Marie Price Bolger, Chief Executive, Trustus who was one of the recipients on the night added “It was an excellent event, Mayor Looney and Deputy Mayor Tuffy should be commended for running with this initiative. It was lovely to see so many people from various community groups represented and the monies received will be put to good use”
