Mayor Cathal King officially opens the New Skate Park in Clondalkin.
Skate enthusiasts, the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs Frances Fitzgerald and local Councillors all turned out to celebrate the opening of the new Clondalkin Skate Park by the Mayor Cathal King on Monday 24th June 2013.This important occasion also marked the launch of ‘National Recreation Week’ by Minister Fitzgerald.
South Dublin County Council’s latest Skate Park is located in the grounds of the Clondalkin Sports and Leisure Centre and features a mix of bends and ramps to test and challenge skaters of all skill levels. South Dublin County Council, despite the economic downturn, has continued to invest in youth programmes and modern facilities. This new Skate Park provides a positive space for youth development and gives young people a place to socialise and keep active.
Speaking at the opening, the Mayor of South Dublin praised the tenacity of the founding group of skaters who got together and advocated for this new facility. Cllr King said ‘I am delighted that young people engaged with their local elected representatives and council staff in the delivery of this project from the initial consultation phase and today we see the positive outcome of their input and hard work. I have been told that the Skate Park has the potential to become a local tourist attraction which will play host to visitors not only from the local area but from all over the Country’.
The construction of the project took a month and was delivered on time and within budget. The project was co-funded by South Dublin County Council and the Department of Transport, Sports and Tourism.
