Ballyroan Library in Rathfarnham opened in February 2013 and has just been nominated for an Irish Architecture award. There has been a seismic shift in the design of library buildings and in the services provided by public libraries in the past five years. This pace of change means that librarians and architects have had to find a new language to respond to the energy and diversity required of a new library. The vision of today’s public library is of a gateway – to enjoyment, to learning and to the expanding digital world beyond. The public library in a certain sense, and much more than any other public building, acts as a community living room. Since opening more than 120,000 books have been borrowed from the new library.
