On Thursday 21st February 2013, Minister for Communications, Energy & Natural Resources, Pat Rabbitte, T.D and Mayor Cathal King, launched on public display, the Draft South Dublin Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP). The Draft South Dublin SEAP has been prepared as part of the Council’s participation in the EU Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) funded Leadership for Energy Action and Planning (LEAP) Programme.

The Draft South Dublin Sustainable Energy Action Plan sets out how South Dublin County can take the lead in addressing EU and national energy reduction targets to 2020. The SEAP has been undertaken in partnership with the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) and eight other local authorities across the EU, as part of the Leadership for Energy Action and Planning (LEAP) programme. The South Dublin SEAP has also been prepared with input from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and City of Dublin Energy Management Agency (CODEMA).

Public consultation for the Draft South Dublin SEAP takes place from Thursday 21st February to Thursday 4th April 2013 inclusive. The documents that make up the Draft South Dublin SEAP can be viewed at www.southdublinenergy.ie and can also be viewed at County Hall, Tallaght, and at the Civic Offices, Clondalkin during normal opening hours (excluding public holidays).

Speaking at the launch event, Minister Pat Rabbitte stated, ‘I very much welcome the commitment that South Dublin County Council is showing to the Covenant of Mayors as part of the Action Plan, and by extension the ambition to reduce its CO2 emissions by a minimum of 20% by 2020. I also welcome the commitment by the Council to reduce its own energy consumption by 33% in 2020 and to achieve a 16% target for national final energy consumption through renewable energy sources, in 2020’.

Mayor Cathal King has welcomed the South Dublin SEAP stating, ‘To sustain and encourage further growth in our County across all sectors, we all need to become better informed about how to reduce energy costs, be more energy efficient and learn how to harness renewable energy alternatives. During the public consultation period we are inviting homeowners, businesses, schools, energy providers and all stakeholders to engage in the preparation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan’.

Details on how to become involved in the public consultation process are available at www.southdublinenergy.ie, follow link for ‘SEAP’.
