Opening of Knocklyon Walking and Cycling Route
A new walking and cycling route in Knocklyon was officially opened on the 21st September 2012. The new route; a 350 metre link between Templeroan Road and Knocklyon Road, is an off road, secure and safe alternative for local residents and leisure users. The project was carried out by South Dublin County Council and funded by the National Transport Authority.
The official opening was performed by Cllr. Cathal King, Mayor of South Dublin County Council. Also present at the event were Deputy Alex White, Senator Cáit Keane and Councillor Paddy Cosgrave. The local community Garda, as well as teachers and pupils from St. Colmcille’s Senior National School travelled by bicycle to the event and residents from the locality were also in attendance.
The new route is a shared surface for pedestrians and cyclists. New public lighting has been installed along the route . The lights are computer monitored and have the latest dimming systems. A recent pedestrian and cycle count showed that the route accommodated 500 trips on one week day in September 2012.
Cllr. Cathal King, Mayor South Dublin County Council said “South Dublin County Council are delighted at the popularity of this new route; the on-going feedback received from the people of Knocklyon has proven invaluable in designing both this project and informing other, similar projects within the County. We hope to implement further projects that encourage walking and cycling, promote healthier lifestyles and provide easy links for people from their homes to local facilities; such as the local shops and schools here at Knocklyon. â€
