South Dublin County Council has just issued the reports on the two Urban Renewal Schemes that have operated in South Dublin for the last ten years. The Tallaght Integrated Area Plan (IAP)1999 – 2008 and the Clondalkin IAP 1999 – 2008 operated on the basis of tax incentives for designated sites. The Plans and consequent development and community initiatives have contributed significantly to the development and regeneration in the two areas.

The scale of development in Tallaght has transformed the county town into a distinctive, modern dynamic and compact urban centre. The Tallaght report provided the detail of the following achievements

  • Over €0.7 billion worth of development projects were completed in the designated areas
  • The IAP provided the mechanism to deliver the agreed vision of the Town Centre area i.e. new streets, people intensive uses, new public realm and a strong residential presence in the town centre
  • The Urban Renewal Scheme has generated over €11.5 million that will be expended in the disadvantaged neighbourhoods on Community Infrastructure and Community Projects, in addition to the €9 million new Arts Centre in Tallaght Town Centre
  • The process has engendered strong links between site developers and the Tallaght Local Employment Service Network

The main aim of the IAP’s was to ensure that the Urban Renewal Scheme would address the physical, economic, social and environmental regeneration of Tallaght Town Centre, Clondalkin Village and the disadvantaged residential neighbourhoods of both areas. The Plans have allowed South Dublin County Council and its partners in the local development, business, statutory and community sectors the opportunity to realise the vision for the areas with the benefit of incentives and to do so in an innovative manner.

Copies of the reports can be obtained from the Council headquarters or from any of the libraries or alternatively can be viewed or downloaded here.
