SECOND GREEN FLAG ST. JOSEPHS BNS, CLONDALKIN

St. Josephs Boys National School, Boot road, Clondalkin celebrated the raising of their second green flag for Energy on 29^th April 2009. The flag was raised by Deputy Mayor Guss OConnell and he congratulated the staff and pupils for their hard work and dedication in protecting and improving their environment.

To achieve the Green Flag for Energy the pupils and staff implemented an energy conservation programme to conserve energy at school this involved designing and placing signs all around the school encouraging pupils and staff to switch off lights and appliances. By switching off, the school is saving energy which is great for our environment as less fossil fuels are burnt which reduces green house gas emissions and helps prevent climate change. Pupils also are continuing the Litter and Waste theme by continuing to recycle and make sure their school is litter free.

Over 3,100 primary, secondary and special schools in Ireland are currently taking part in the programme and 1,465 have been awarded the Green Flag. The Irish Green-Schools programme is one of themost successful within the international network. One of the main factors in the success of the Irish Green-Schools programme is the partnership between the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce and Local Authorities i.e.the financial and time contribution of the Local Authorities to the programme.
