Jobstown pupils Put their Foot Down
Mayor Marie Corr presented awards to pupils from St. Thomass Senior National School in Jobstown Tallaght, who put their foot down for the month of October and walked to school as part of the International Walk to School Month. The event takes place every October with the overall aim of promoting health, safety, physical activity and concern for the environment in addition to having fun in the process. To encourage walking for the full month a competition to find the Best Walking Class in the school was organised. The effect of this was that pupils felt they had to walk to school so as not to let their classmates down.
Mayor Corr said that the event was an ideal opportunity for the local authority, school, pupils and parents to come together to promote the health, safety, social and environmental benefits of walking to school. She also took the opportunity to issue a timely reminder to the pupils about pedestrian safety and the importance of being clearly seen by other road users when they are out and about now that the darker days and poorer weather conditions are here. Every pupil was given a reflective tag to attach to their school bag to help them to be more easily seen from a distance.
Margaret Branyan, Road Safety Officer said that this is an example of the kind of initiative the Council is keen to support and that hopefully the walk month will encourage the pupils to continue walking for the rest of the school year.
Ends.
