Placenames and Streetnames Directory for South Dublin

South Dublin County Council today launched the South Dublin Placenames and Streetnames Directory. The directory is a comprehensive listing of all placenames, streetnames, schools, apartments, industrial estates, shopping centres and parks, in English and Irish.

The publishing of this directory has been greatly anticipated as it is hoped to be a useful source for people living and working in the County to use with confidence the place names provided in the Irish Language. The Irish Language is a clear link to the county’s history and heritage which the directory aims to preserve.

Speaking at the launch the Mayor Marie Corr, South Dublin County Council, said “The directory is part of an overall scheme by the Council which was developed under section 11 of the Official Languages Act 2003. A series of initiatives are underway by the council with the aim of promoting Irish and bringing uniformity across the county, for example the replacement of incorrect road signs”

South Dublin County Council is bounded by the Dublin mountains to the south and stretches from the River Liffey at Lucan through Palmerston, Clondalkin, south to Newcastle, Rathcoole, Saggart. It includes Tallaght West, South and Central and stretches east to Templeogue and Rathfarnham.

Eolaire Logainmneacha agus Sráidainmeacha Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas

Sheolaigh Comhairle Contae Átha Cliath Theas an tEolaire Logainmneacha agus Sráidainmneacha Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas inniu. Is liosta forleathan é an t-eolaire seo de logainmneacha, sráidainmneacha, scoileanna, eastáit tionscail, ionaid siopadóireachta agus páirceanna, atá as Béarla agus as Gaeilge.

Bhíothas ag súil go mór le foilsiú an t-eolaire seo agus táthar dóchasach gur foinse feidhmeach a bheidh ann do dhaoine atá ag obair agus in bhur gcónaí sa Chontae misneach a bheith orthu úsáid a bhaint as logainmneacha Gaeilge mar atá léirithe san eolaire. Tá an-bhaint ann idir stair agus oidhreacht an chontae agus an Ghaeilge agus tá sé mar chuspóir ag an gComhairle na nithe seo a choimeád trí fhoilsiú an t-eolaire seo.

Dúirt an Méara Marie Corr, Comhairle Contae Átha Cliath Theas agus í ag labhairt ag an seoladh ‘Is cuid de scéim fhorleathan na comhairle é an t-eolaire a bhí forbartha faoi mír 11 d’Acht na dTeangacha Oifigiúla 2003. Tá sraith tionscnamh faoi shiúl ag an gcomhairle faoi láthair le cuspóir an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn tríd an chontae go léir agus tá athchur na gcomharthaí bóithre mícheart mar dea-shampla den sórt sin.’

Tá Contae Bhaile Átha Cliath Theas faoi teorainn ag Sléibhte Bhaile Átha Cliath ar an taobh theas agus téann sé i bhfad le hAbhann na Life ag Leamhcán, tríd Baile Phámar, Cluain Dolcáin agus ó dheas go dtí an Caisleán Nua, Ráth Cúil agus Teach Sagard. Áiríonn sé Tamlacht Thiar, Theas agus Lár agus téann sé siar i bhfad le Teach Mealóg agus Ráth Fearnáin.
