Sacred Heart JNS Killinarden, Tallaght raised its first Green Flag for Waste and Litter on Thursday 12th June 2008. The Deputy Mayor of South Dublin County Marie Corr attended the flag raising ceremony and she congratulated the staff and pupils at Sacred Heart JNS in being awarded the flag saying I have heard all about your hard work over the past two years such as recycling, litter picking and composting and about your Spring Clean day and the Tidy Classroom Competition. This shows real commitment to helping our environment.
To achieve the Green Flag for Waste and Litter staff and pupils at Sacred Heart JNS have been keeping their school litter free, composting and recycling. Through these measures along with many more the students and staff at Sacred Heart JNS are helping the environment as they reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Sacred Heart JNS Green Schools Committee comprised of pupils, teachers, parents, cleaners and the caretaker Johnny Maguire. The Green Schools Coordinator is Joanne Butler.
Green Schools is an International Environmental Education Programme that promotes and acknowledges whole school, long-term action for the environment. At present over 2,700 Irish schools are participating in the programme and over 1116 have been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award. There are currently over 14,500 schools in 37 countries taking part in the Programme internationally.
