PRESS RELEASE

Mayor Billy Gogarty Launches UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and Destitution

17th October 2007

South Dublin County Council organised a programme of readings marking the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty and Destitution. It was started 25 years ago by people living in poverty to say that poverty and exclusion are totally unacceptable. It is a special day to get together in solidarity with people who have to live everyday with poverty and social exclusion in Ireland, Europe and the World.

Mayor Billy Gogarty stated that although South Dublin County has experienced significant regeneration in recent years and the quality of life and opportunities for many have been greatly enhanced, we need to remember that there area still particular groups of people who are vulnerable to poverty and social exclusion such as children and young people, older people, people with disabilities and members of ethnic minorities.

Social Inclusion is a priority issue addressed in Council policies assisted by a dedicated social inclusion officer and collaboration with South Dublin County Development Boards Social Inclusion Measures Group. Tackling poverty at national or local level requires an integrated multi agency approach. Working in co-operation we can achieve our common goal- of eliminating disadvantage and improving the quality of life for all residents of the county. It is hoped that this event will raise our awareness and enhance our understanding of the key issues around poverty and social inclusion in South Dublin County.

The Mayor Billy Gogarty acknowledged the dedication and hard work carried out by the

Present on the day Barnardos, Tallaght Homeless Advice Unit, Concern and St Vincent

de Paul.
