Mayor Eamonn Maloney on behalf of the Members of South Dublin County Council will officially launch the Walking Bus Scheme in International Walk to School Month 2006 in Scoil Naomh Padraig, Ballyroan Crescent on Thursday 12th October at 11am.
The Walking Bus concept offers an alternative to the car for the school journey and it represents a sustainable mode of transport. As well as reducing traffic and congestion at the school gates there are many health, educational, and environmental benefits to the scheme; it provides opportunities to get exercise and fresh air at the start of the school day; opportunities for children to learn essential road safety skills that will be of benefit in later years when they become more independent; and of course its environmentally friendly producing no air or noise pollution.
The Walking Bus project in Scoil Naomh Padraig, Ballyroan is the first of its kind in South Dublin County Councils area. The scheme ran as a pilot project last year. It made its first journey last September (2005) and continued throughout the school year in all weathers until the holidays in June 2006 and has now resumed again for the current school year. Evaluation of the scheme suggests that the children enjoy using the bus and now consider it part of their daily routine.
The bus operates on mornings only. The reason for this is because children are involved in various after school activities.
It starts its journey every morning from under the canopy at The Church of the Holy Spirit down at Marian Road and completes its journey at the door of the school. The route crosses three roads, Anne Devlin Park, Ballyroan Road, and Ballyroan Crescent.
All busses need drivers and conductors and the Walking Bus is no different. This scheme could not run without the commitment of a dedicated pool of volunteers mainly parents/ carers who act as drivers and conductors and accompany the bus on its journey to the school every day and co-ordinate the scheme.
