DubsDay – A Great Day in May

South Dublin Libraries in association with South Dublin County Tourism has organized 2 walks in South Dublin County on Sunday 14th May 2006 to coincide with the first Dubsday.

Sunday 14th May 2006 will be Dublin’s first ‘DubsDay’.  Dublin Tourism, Dublin City Council, and the city's and county’s visitor attractions invite you, the city's people to explore your own turf and see Dublin through fresh eyes! Explore your own area or discover new things to see and do in Dublin.

Tomás Maher, chairperson of Tallaght Historical Society and local historian will lead a walk "From Monastic Village to Modern City" in Tallaght village on Sunday 14th May. The walk will start from St Maelruan's Church at 2.00pm. The route will take in St Maelruan’s Church and graveyard, its anglo-norman tower and the grounds of St. Mary’s Priory as well as some of the newer features of Tallaght.

Sandra Scully will lead a walk along the Grand Canal in South Dublin “From 6 to 12” also on Sunday 14th May. The walk will start from the Kylemore Road Canal Bridge at 2.00pm. The walk will span from the 6th - 12th locks, taking in among other items, The Guinness feeder bed at Park West; the site of the only major canal accident; the 11th Lock where the building of the canal commenced; Omar's Lock House, Grange Castle and Grange Castle Business Park; the Fonthill and Outer Ring Roads. Along the way Sandra will detail the flora and fauna of this wildlife haven.

These walks are free. Just turn up and enjoy exploring these aspects of our county.

A number of other venues in South Dublin County are participating in DubsDay. From May 5th 2006, you can book your tickets for the attractions that you'd like to visit on www.dubsday.com and collect them from the tourist office on Suffolk Street (just off Grafton St) from Monday May 8th at 2pm to Thursday May 11th at 5pm.

Rathfarnham Castle, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14 will also be open on the day. Rathfarnham Castle was built in 1588 for Archbishop Adam Loftus and was one of the largest residences in Dublin with no fewer than eighteen fireplaces. Admission  on the day will be free of charge. In fact entry during its open season from May to October, 9.30am – 5.30pm admission is free of charge. Last admission is one hour before closing. Also in Rathfarnham is the Pearse Museum and St. Enda’s Park. The museum is located in the the former school run by Patriot and Educationalist, Patrick Pearse and it is situated in beautiful grounds. Attractions include exhibitions, a nature study room with attractive displays on Irish Flora & Fauna and an audio-visual show titled "This Man Kept a School". St. Enda's Park is one of Dublin City's most charming and atmospheric parks, with its riverside walks, waterfall and walled garden. Free tickets for Sunday 14th May can be booked on www.dubsday.com. On Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May there will be a free kids’ train journey around Corkage Park. From 2.00pm – 4.00pm Situated close to the village of Clondalkin, Corkagh Park has its origins in a manor house and its estate and includes the old Corkagh Demesne and land on both sides of the Camac River. Those who are no longer kids can enjoy a peaceful stroll around the Park.
South Dublin County is well served by public parks and open spaces of which there are almost 4000 acres under the control of Parks and Landscape Services Section of South Dublin County Council.  This is mainly comprised of four large regional parks at Tymon Park, Tallaght; Corkagh Park, Clondalkin; Griffeen Valley Park, Lucan and Dodder Valley Park between Tallaght and Rathfarnham and 50 neighbourhood parks such as Sean Walsh Memorial Park, Ballymount Park and Jobstown Park in Tallaght, Ballyowen Park, Lucan and Collinstown Park, Clondalkin.
