Citywest Luas Link – Line A1

The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen T.D. was at County Hall Tallaght today to receive the first copy of the public consultation document on the proposed Luas branch to Citywest.  The Railway Procurement Agency, in partnership with a group of developers, proposes to develop a 3.2 km Luas spur from Belgard to Citywest.

This document will form the basis for discussion and consultation with residents, business and commercial interests, Luas customers, stakeholders and the general public

Luas line A1 will deliver top quality public transport services to established communities and will facilitate the rapidly developing Citywest business area.  Details of an Open Day will be announced shortly.  It is estimated that 3.5 million extra Red Line Passenger journeys will be made as a result of this spur.

The Department of Transports’ strategy for investment in public transport Transport 21 provides for the Citywest Line.

“When Luas was launched in 2004 we estimated that we would be carrying 60,000 passengers daily at this point we are, in fact carrying in excess of 70,000 passengers daily”, Mr. White added.

Details of the route – which serves the growing areas of Fettercairn, Cheeverstown and Citywest Campus terminating Fortunestown, are included in the Newsletter that will be distributed locally and are also available on the RPA website: www.rpa.ie

This line will serve a part of West Dublin which has not been well served to date with infrastructure.  It is estimated that 3.5 million extra passenger journeys will be made as a result of this spur.

This new line will serve the growing areas of Fettercairn, Cheeverstown and Citywest Campus terminating at Fortunestown.  This new project is a novel and welcome initiative in that a large proportion of the works (civil and track works, provision of all necessary lands, 350 space Park and Ride and a defined monetary contribution) are being deliverd by private sector partners – Davy Hickey Properties and Harcourt Development Ltd, Heads of Agreement have been entered into.

Following completion of the Public Consultation phase on the proposed route to Fortunestown an application will be lodged, in August 2006 for a Light Rail Order.  Subject to the granting of an Enforceable Order it is expected that passenger services on the new Citywest Link will commence in 2009.
