South Dublin County Council makes a presentation to the Joint Committee of the Oireachtas on Environment.

Director of Environmental Services, Mary Pyne outlined the position regarding household recycling in South Dublin County on Wednesday 11th January at a public session of the committee. This was followed by a question and answer session.
She outlined the services currently provided for and funded by the Council – weekly non-recyclable waste collection, green waste centre, home composter supply, green bin service, bring banks, Civic amenity, Waste electrical and Electronic Equipment reception centre and a community recycling initiative. Plans and targets for the future are contained in the Dublin Waste Management Plan 2005-2010 with a recycling target set of 59% to be achieved by 2010.

Ms. Pyne said “There are major challenges ahead including provision of accessible infrastructure, full cost recovery, obtaining a sustainable market for recyclables and reduction of waste at source. South Dublin County Council will continue to improve the recycling service and encourage the principles of ‘Reuce, Reuse and Recycle’
The committee will continue to receive presentations from various parties involved in household recycling and hope to make a report in two to three months.
