Beautiful South Dublin County Awards
Press release - 20 October 2005

Mayor Thérèse Ridge and Director of Environmental Services, Tom Doherty presented the awards in the first Beautiful South Dublin County/Ath Cliath Theas go Deas competition on Wednesday 19th October in the County Hall, Tallaght.
This competition is a development of the former Tidy Districts awards with increasing emphasis on sustainability and care of the environment.
One hundred and fifteen entries were received from resident groups, businesses, youth groups, hotels, pubs and individual gardens.
 “All the participants in this programme are winners. I congratulate you all – not only are you making a difference to the place where you live, you are creating neighbourliness and a sense of community and place, that makes a difference and creates a sense of belonging” said Mayor Thérèse Ridge in her speech.
The overall winner of the Beautiful South Dublin County/Ath Cliath Theas go Deas 2005 competition was Monastery Estate, Clondalkin. The residents of Monastery were delighted with the award and look forward to their prize of a session with Éanna Ní Lamhna, of Mooney goes Wild fame. She will look at the estate from an environmental perspective and advise the residents accordingly.
The prize winners were spread throughout the County.  A list of prize winners is attached.
Mayor Thérèse Ridge officially launched a schools competition sponsored by South Dublin County Council highlighting the issues facing the environment targeting Primary, secondary schools and a special project for Transition years. She said “The young people are going to make the difference in how we manage our environment and how we handle our waste. As Mayor I look forward to seeing the entries and presenting the prizes in May next year.
