BUILDERS PAY FOR STUDENTS TO GO BACK TO COLLEGE

Irish builders are using their good fortune to help seven lucky students avail of second chance education on the Respond! developed degree in Housing and Community Studies.  Next Tuesday 4th October at mid-day will see the launch of the innovative scheme, amounting to more than €20,000 each year, in South Dublin County Council Offices.

The building firms and consultants, including Collen Construction Ltd, O’Reilly Hyland Tierney & Assocs and Healy Kelly Turner Townsend will provide the bursaries to students who would otherwise be unable to take up their place on the course, which is offered by University College Dublin with Respond! Housing Association.

The novel partnership will benefit students ranging from residents on a Respond! Housing Estate to those with refugee status who hope that the part time degree course will enable them to develop a career in Housing.

Tim Quigley of Duffy Quigley is delighted to be involved in this innovative project.  “We have worked with Respond! Housing Association for many years on building projects and are very pleased to now be involved in supporting their education programme”.

Pat Cogan, the founder of Respond! Housing Association sees great potential in the new initiative aimed at supporting potential students who otherwise would not have an opportunity to access third level education; especially after the successful launch, by Minister Brian Cowan, of the unique degree programme in March of this year.

“Respond! has been working in education for many years so this is a very proud moment for us – the bursaries give us a lot more freedom in our student intake and we are very much looking forward to this next academic year”.

The launch will be attended by students, representatives from each of the contributing companies, Respond! and UCD staff.  Yvonne Dervan, from South Dublin County Council is entering the third year of her degree.  “As a Housing practitioner I personally have always welcomed the opportunity to pursue a relevant professional qualification; the new bursary will give more people a chance to take their future into their own hands”.

Respond! are very grateful to the following donors who have also pledged funds to the Bursary: Beleem Construction Ltd, Carty Developments Ltd, Malone O’Regan, Sord Data Systems Ltd and Thomas Kelly and Sons Ltd.
