New Mayor for South Dublin County –Mayor Therese Ridge
At South Dublin County Council Annual Meeting Today the New Mayor Therese Ridge accepted the Chain of Office from the outgoing Mayor Robert Dowds and announced that the theme of her term for the upcoming year would be to make "South Dublin County Council a Caring Council with a focus on the protection of the vulnerable in our Society, to pay particular attention to the aged and the disabled in our Communities, and to endeavour to bring about an improvement in the circumstances of many."
Member of FG party since the mid 70's Mayor Ridge first ran for election to Council in 1985 and successfully took her seat. Elected to represent the Electoral Area of Clondalkin, Therese has maintained her position on the Council over the last 20 years and this June celebrated her 20th Anniversary. During this time she also held a Seat in Seanad Eireann with responsility for the Social Welfare Portfolio.
Deputy Mayor Karen Warren was elected also at this years Annual Meeting, making this the first time in the history of the Council in which two women have held the top two positions on the Council. Karen joined Fine Gael in 1998 and successfully ran for Council in the Local Elections in 2004. Her election as Deputy Mayor brings to a close her first year as a Member of South Dublin County Council representing Tallaght Central
The voting in relation to the Area Committee Chairs for the upcoming year showed only one change in the lineup. Fintan McCarthy Green Party took the seat on the Lucan Clondalkin Committee while Eamon Moloney Lab and Alex White Lab retained there seats for the Tallaght and Terenure / Rathfarnham areas.
