CHILDREN DECORATE COUNCIL CHRISTMAS TREE WITH RUBBISH

Thursday 16th December, 2004 Mayor Robert Dowds, South Dublin County Council  today presented prizes to the winners of the Race Against Waste Christmas Decorations Competition.  The competition for primary school pupils, aims to get children and their parents thinking about how to reuse and recycle materials that might otherwise be thrown away or brought to the recycling centre.  Entries included decorations made fcrom yogurt and milk cartons to pizza boxes and jam-jar lids, some of which were hand painted, some were cut and mixed with various other materials.   Pupils from 10 schools throughout South Dublin participated in the competition and one entry from each school was put forward to the Final.  The entries were judged by the Arts Officer and the winning decorations were hung on the Council’s giant Christmas Tree in the County Library.

“Its wonderful to see how, with a bit of imagination and effort, household rubbish can be turned into things of great beauty while at the same time reducing the amount of rubbish being landfilled said Mayor Robert Dowds of South Dublin County Council.  I congratulate all of the children who entered and pay tribute to their teachers and their parents.  This competition shows all of us how the Race Against Waste can be great fun as well as the sensible thing to do.”

Thousands of children around the country are participating in the Christmas Tree Decoration Competition run by local authorities and supported by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government’s Race Against Waste” Campaign to get people at home and at work to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill and to recycle more.
