The report published in the Irish Times on 1st December 2004 created a misleading picture of the delivery of social housing in South Dublin County. This is due to the fact that a comparison was made between approved starts and completions and no account was taken of schemes in progress. The article stated that this Council delivered only 59.26% of its’ authorised starts. There are 1124 units under construction in this county at this time.
The exact situation over the last 10 years is set out below and is very different to the one portrayed..:-
| Year | Authorised Starts | Actual Starts | % Achievement |
| 1994 | 95 | 95 | 100% |
| 1995 | 110 | 139 | 126% |
| 1996 | 135 | 182 | 134% |
| 1997 | 115 | 114 | 99% |
| 1998 | 105 | 112 | 106% |
| 1999 | 180 | 274 | 152% |
| *2000 / 01 / 02 / 03 | 1420* | 1264 | 89% |
| *2004 / 05 / 06 / 07 / 08 | 1920 | 584 | 169% (as 1/5th of 5 year) |
Overall Performance Level : 121.875 i.e. approx 20% above target.
This * refers to the years covered by the multi annual programme...
In addition to social housing provided by the Council South Dublin works closely with voluntary housing providers. An additional 101 voluntary units were facilitated by the Council and it is anticipated that between 2005 and 2008 there will be 1129 voluntary housing units provided in the county. Therefore 2005 to 2008 will see 3,449 new social units come on stream in the county.
South Dublin County Council is pleased to clarify the actual position in relation to the social housing programme in South Dublin County . Should you require any further information you can contact jhoran@sdublincoco.ie.
