GOOD NEWS ON ADAMSTOWN RAIL STATION

Just one year after the approval of the Adamstown Planning Scheme by An Bord Pleanala, South Dublin County Council is pleased to announce that as a result of ongoing discussion with Iarnród Eireann on the provision of a rail station and train services to serve the new community at Adamstown, it is now proposed to develop a ‘turnback’ rail facility at the Adamstown railway station.

This is of importance because the proposed ‘turnback’ facility will provide an extra rail line at Adamstown Station that can allow train services to commence and terminate at the station during peak hours.  The ‘turnback’ is to be included within the Railway Order Application as part of the Iarnród Eireann - Kildare Route Project, which involves doubling of the existing railway line  beyond Adamstown.

It is now likely that a planning application for Adamstown Railway Station will be submitted by the Adamstown developers before Christmas 2004 and that the Station will be operational by early 2006.  The doubling of the existing track to Adamstown and building of the turnback facility is expected by 2009 as part of the Railway Order delivery.

The phasing plan agreed as part of the Adamstown Planning Scheme requires the provision of a rail station and 300 space park and ride car park at Adamstown before more than 1,000 new dwellings can be completed.  Construction of more than 4,200 dwellings in Adamstown is dependent upon the doubling of the railway line to accommodate 3,000 peak hour rail trips between Adamstown and the city centre.

According to the Council’s Project Manager for Adamstown, Paul Hogan, “We have been working closely with Iarnród Eireann and are very pleased with the proposed turnback at Adamstown. This is great news for both Adamstown and Lucan and will mean that train services can start at Adamstown, giving the whole community access to a frequent and reliable train service with a relatively short journey time into the city centre as a realistic alternative to the private car”.
