Naas Road Widening
The continuation of the Naas Road improvement scheme, which forms part of the National Development Plan, provides for a 3-lane dual carriageway in each direction, closure of median openings and interchanges.
The scheme provides for full reconstruction of existing carriageway west of Rathcoole to the County Boundary for a distance of 5.5k and then by Kildare County Council to the Naas Motorway.
It will entail, within South County Council area, the closure of all median openings and the construction of an interchange at Steelstown to enable crossings to the made in safety.
Present traffic volumes on the N7 Naas Road are in the region of 60,000 vehicles per day which greatly exceeds the volume predicted in 1998 (41,000-51,000). These levels are expected to grow by 70% approx over the next 20 years.
The improvement measures to be undertaken by both Local Authorities will provide significant benefits to all road users by improving journey times and reducing accident risks.
