Expedition to Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in support of ChildAid.
On 3rd July 2004, a team of volunteers from South Dublin County Council and Institute of Technology, Tallaght will travel to Tanzania in East Africa to climb to the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro in support of ChildAid. Kilimanjaro, which stands at 5,895 mtrs is known as ‘The Roof of Africa’.
The team, which will be led by the Mayor of South Dublin, Cllr Máire Ardagh, and the Director of IT Tallaght, Dr Columb Collins, will consist of students, and staff from both organisations. Cllr Ardagh’s husband, Seán Ardagh TD will also join the expedition. It is hoped to raise upwards of €100,000 in sponsorship from the climb, which will help fund ChildAid’s education and welfare programmes in East Africa.
During the coming months, team members will take part in regular hillwalking outings to help acclimatise for the challenge ahead on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. The training programme will help alleviate the threat of Altitude Sickness, which will be the biggest problem facing the team on Kilimanjaro.
It is planned to reach the summit on Saturday 10 July, at about 10am (8am Irish time), remaining there for about two hours in total, before the descent.
Following the completion of the climb, the team will return to Kenya to visit education and aid projects supported by ChildAid in the slums of Nairobi. Given the warmth and friendliness of the people, and particularly the children, this promises to be the highlight of the entire trip.
