Greenhills Road – Official Opening 9th June 2004

Press Release

The construction of the Greenhills Road link from Airton Road to the Tallaght By-pass was included as an objective in the 1998 Development Plan and its construction completes the Tallaght Box a long held objective of South Dublin County Council. The Tallaght 2000 plan and the Integrated Area Plan included the construction of the Greenhills Road extension as major objective. The completion of this traffic circulation box around the Town Centre removes through traffic and creates a pedestrian oriented centre. The road was constructed with the assistance of grant funding from the Department of the Environment and Local Government. The balance of the costs associated with constructing the roads were provided from the Council’s own resources. The cost of providing this link is € 3 million. Other projects completed in the area recently include the Oldbawn Bridge widening and the construction of the Spawell Bridge, the Cookstown Way, Whitestown Way and Kiltipper Way have all been provided since the County Council Headquarters relocated to Tallaght.

In technical terms the construction of this link involved the re-alignment of approximately 0.66km of single carriageway 9-10.5 metres in width complete with footpath and cycle track and the construction of 0.12km of single carriageway 10.5 metres in width between Airton Road and the N81 (Tallaght Bypass) complete with footpaths together with associated ancillary works and the demolition of old Tallaght Town Centre consisting of a two storey building together with adjacent car park at ground and first floor level.
