ST CUTHBERT’S PARK – OFFICIAL OPENING

 

Cll. Sheila O Brien on behalf of Mayor Máire Ardagh and South Dublin County Council will attend the

official opening of the newly landscaped St. Cuthberts Park on the 9th June 2004 at 11.30am.

 

St. Cuthberts’ Park incorporates an area of approximately 35 acres and forms the Class 1 public open space for the Deansrath, Kilmahuddrick and Bawnogue neighbourhood. The design for the newly landscaped St. Cuthberts Park was based on ideas developed through the local Art Squad and widespread local consultation through the URBAN project in 1997.

 

The final design of the park involved further widespread consultation with the residents, schools and voluntary groups in the locality surrounding the park. A community artist was employed to do workshops with the local school children, resulting in a lot of their ideas being implemented within the overall design of the park. The children from St. Ronans National School, Scoil Mochua and Deansrath Community College actually took part in the implementation. Their work is illustrated on the sign board at the entrance.

 

To date a new boundary stone wall has been constructed around the perimeter of the park, new footpaths have been installed, seating has been purchased, and the grass areas in the park have been re-landscaped which includes the introduction of mounding. During National Tree Week in March 2002, the local school children in conjunction with the parks staff, planted semi-mature oak trees and a beech hedge along a section of the perimeter wall. In the following year, children from St.Ronans National School planted eight semi-mature Spanish chestnuts at the main entrance.

 

The entrance to the park has also been upgraded. This involved a series of paved areas, a stone sculpture of a horse set into the hill, and some ground murals, including a wildlife trail, which has been painted by 3 of the local schools in conjunction with the community artist, Eileen Gallen. The seating and a new entrance sign has also be installed. Over the next 5 years additional tree planting will take place which will include the regeneration of the existing hedgerows.
