Illegal disposal by dumping of waste in South Dublin County

The problem of illegal dumping is being tackled by South Dublin County Council in a planned and systematic way.  This involves the cleaning up of areas but also putting preventative measures in place to avoid recurrence of illegal dumping .

With the support of the Gardai, the Council has set up 12 checkpoints in recent months. 26 vehicles were stopped and seized. There have been 2 prosecutions and there are more pending.

Under waste regulations permits are required by operators for the collection of waste.

A  Transfrontier Shipment of Waste Licence is required for movement of waste out of the country.

A Waste Licence is required for the landfilling of waste.

Persons who wish to apply for a Transportation of Waste Licence must do so through Dublin City Council.

Prosecution through the Courts and conviction under the waste regulations may result in fines in the     region of €10,000.

Also, Householders in South Dublin who use the services of such operators are targeted and if refuse or waste matter is dumped they can face Substantial fines.

The Council continues to appeal to householders in this County not to employ the services of illegal operators and welcomes information such as household flyers from Collectors without permit.   These may be forwarded to the Environmental Services Department, County Hall, Tallaght, Dublin 24. Similarly, information such as Car Registration numbers of persons seen illegally dumping would also be welcomed.
