AHERN ANNOUNCES RECORD FUNDING FOR DUBLIN LOCAL AUTHORITIES
Mr Noel Ahern, T.D., Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal, today (9 December) announced record levels of Local Government Fund general purposes grants to Dublin local authorities for 2004. Funding of €162.8 million is being provided to the four Dublin local authorities in respect of their day to day general expenses.
Announcing the funding, Minister Ahern said "Funding is the key to the revitalisation of local government throughout the country. The significant levels of funding being channelled through our local government system next year will allow local authorities to continue to deliver and build on quality and efficient public services to meet the needs of all our communities. This government undertook a programme to improve local government in coming to office, and once again has delivered on its commitment to an empowered local government system through the provision of resources."
The funding announced for local authorities in Dublin represents an increase of 11.5 % over the corresponding allocation for last year and is an increase of some 90 % since the present Government came into office in mid 1997.
