South Dublin Housing Contracts â€“ Protest at County Hall 7^th October 2003

South Dublin County Council has a very extensive public housing construction programme underway at present. Eleven contracts comprising over 600 housing units are under construction and a further fifteen projects involving over 900 additional housing units are scheduled for commencement before the end of this year. The Council uses a wide range of construction methods and technologies including Traditional Construction, Timber, Steel frame and Pre Formed Construction. The Council is obliged to constantly examine all methods in order to provide Value for Money, Quality and Speed of Delivery.

All contracts are finished to the highest standards.

A protest took place at the Councilâ€™s Headquarters on Tuesday 7^th October in relation to one of the Councilâ€™s contractors at present involved in construction of two adjoining housing schemes in Clondalkin. (The schemes comprise 83 and 68 dwellings).

No notice was given to the Council that the protest was to take place and

no complaint regarding non-observance of conditions by the Contractor had been

received. Furthermore, the Council was supplied with a letter from BATU (Building

Allied Trade Union) stating that their members were not involved in Industrial

action.

The Project Architects overseeing these projects have now been instructed to

examine and report back, on compliance with contracts and allegations of any

breaches of contract conditions.
