SOUTH DUBLIN COUNTY COUNCIL - NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK 03

29th September to 5th  October 2003

START RECYCLING – KEEP RECYCLING

South Dublin County Council and REPAK call on you to start recycling this week by taking all you glass, cans, paper, cardboard and plastic to your nearest recycling centre.

Between January and June 2003, at South Dublin’s 24 can banks, householders recycled 637,800 cans – the equivalent of 16.7 tonnes of aluminium.  A further 810 tonnes of glass were recycled in the area during this period.

Last year approximately 4,367 tonnes of packaging was recycled throughout the month of October and it is hoped to increase this by 30% this year. In 2002 Repak funded the recycling of approximately 50,000 tonnes of packaging waste sourced from the domestic waste stream. This was 60% up on the previous year, however we in Ireland are still dumping in excess of 60% of used packaging that should be recycled.

In addition, the Council also provides a Green Bin to householders for recycling of paper, cardboard, aluminium and tin in their own homes. To date, 68,000 houses our of 75,000 have this door to door recycling facilities.

South Dublin County Council will provide, over the coming months, a number of new recycling facilities ( (Bring Banks) in the near future ( see photos of new facility just delivered to Rathfarnham )

South Dublin County Council hopes the public will fully utilise the range of Bringbanks, Civic Amenity Sites and Green Waste facility in our area.  For full details see www.southdublin.ie/environment or phone environment at 4149000 ext. 4248.” or www.repak.ie

Why Recycle?

Aluminium;- Aluminium is made from Bauxite ore which is a non- renewable renewable resource . Aluminium is use d to package a wide range of consumer goods. Over 300 million aluminium cans are sold in Ireland every year
