Ahern approves funding of €800,000 approx. for estate management projects countrywide

Mr Noel Ahern T.D., Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal announced today (8 September) that he has approved projects under the 2003 Scheme of Grants for Housing Management Initiatives. The main objective of the scheme, which was initiated in 1995, is to provide assistance to local authorities for practical pilot projects which would enable them to better their housing management performance, improve the quality of the service being delivered and assist in the development of tenant participation in estate management. In making the announcement Minister Ahern said "The grants are part of an overall strategy designed to better local authority estate management"

The terms of the Scheme provide that grants of up to 90% of the expenditure incurred by authorities on approved staffing projects, on a one year pilot basis are recouped by the Department and up to 50% of the expenditure incurred by authorities on approved general management projects, on a one year basis are recouped by the Department.

A total of 43 projects involving 25 local authorities have been approved for funding in 2003 and the individual projects cover a wide range of activities in estate/housing management.
