COMMUNITY AWARDS 2003.
South Dublin Community Awards 2003 were presented on 5th June 2003 at a very successful and well attended presentation evening in Finnstown Country House Hotel, Lucan, Co. Dublin.
An unprecedented 150 groups entered for the awards, comprising of over 3,200 volunteers. It is estimated that 30,000 people avail of the services of these groups which cover every aspect of life in the county including sporting, youth groups, women’s groups, community groups etc. The diversity of entries shows the wealth of initiatives currently being undertaken at local level by a wide variety of community groups.
The following awards were presented by Mayor Councillor Jim Daly.
Main award, €3,000 was presented to Little by Little. This support group help each other get over the isolation and loneliness that seems to be part and parcel of bringing up a child with special needs. They place huge importance on their children being integrated into the local community.
Five additional awards of €1,000:
· L.A.T.C.H
· Dublin/Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team
· Perrystown Manor Estate Ltd.
· Golden Cobra Amateur Boxing Club
· Arthur Griffith Environmental Group
The high standard and commitment of the volunteers involved in the various groups was highly praised by the Mayor.
The awards ceremony also included a special award to commemorate the European year of Disabled People 2003 and €1,000 was presented by An Mayor to Lucan Disability Action Group in this category. Also presented was ²Mayors Special Award for Volunteerism² to St. Mary’s Gaelic Football Club, Saggart for its outstanding voluntary contribution to the community.
